Key Data Set Information
Location DE
Geographical representativeness description The data set represents the country specific situation in Germany, focusing on the main technologies, the region specific characteristics and / or import statistics.
Reference year 2022
Name
Biogas (1 kg)
Use advice for data set This data set relates to the production of 1 kg of biogas. The calorific value is 36 MJ/kg. The methane content is 59%. The data set does not contain any emissions from the combustion of the biogas, only the manufacturing processes including the storage of biogenic carbon. For a complete consideration, the emissions from the use of the biogas and the efficiencies at building level must be considered separately.
Technical purpose of product or process Biogas is mainly used to generate electrical and thermal energy.

Biogenic carbon content
  • Biogenic carbon content in product (Biog. C in product): 0.42 kg
  • Biogenic carbon content in accompanying packaging (Biog. C in packaging): 0.0 kg
Time representativeness
Data set valid until 2024
Time representativeness description Annual average
Technological representativeness
Technology description including background system Biogas is obtained from different sources. The data set represent the so-called "consumption mix" in Germany. The stored mix contains 70.9% biogas through anaerobic fermentation of organic waste and energy crops to biogas through wet fermentation, 17.8% biogas from landfills with landfill gas generation and 11.3% biogas from sewage sludge. All essential process steps of biogas production such as transport, processing of the substrates, fermentation, exhaust gas cleaning and compression of the biogas are contained in the data set.
