Use advice for data set | Scope: Fortrac® MPT geosynthetic grid is manufactured in the HUESKER Synthetic GmbH plants in Dülmen and Gescher, Germany. This EPD was created for an average product in the Fortrac® MPT product range. System boundary: This Environmental Product Declaration is a cradle-to-gate EPD, i.e. all potential environmental impacts by the product from the cradle to the plant gate are considered. According to /DIN EN 15804/, this complies with product phases A1-A3. The following production steps are considered during the manufacturing phase: Manufacture of the synthetic yarn Manufacture of the coating paste Transport between the Dülmen and Gescher plants Manufacture of the geosynthetic grid (twisting process, warp production, weaving/warp-knitting process, coating process) Packing the geosynthetic grid |
Technical purpose of product or process | Fortrac® MPT geogrids stand for innovative design offering technical and economic advantages. The Fortrac® MPT product group is installed and used as primary reinforcement in a wide variety of earthwork structures. For example, in the following areas of application: Dam construction Landfill construction Groundwater protection Geosynthetic reinforced soil Sludge lagoon remediation Base reinforcement Reservoirs |

General comment on data set | Fortrac® MPT is a flexible, high-strength geosynthetic grid which has been used in soil reinforcement for more than 20 years. Fortrac® MPT geogrids are made from high-modulus, low-creep synthetic materials enclosed in a protective polymer coating. Fortrac® MPT geogrids are manufactured in such a way as to guarantee high stability at the intersections accompanied by a high degree of interaction flexibility, i.e. capable of adapting to soils to be reinforced. Fortrac® MPT geogrids are manufactured from polyvinyl alcohol (MD) and polyamide (CMD). A protective polymer coating is also applied to the grid. Polyvinyl alcohol in the main direction of reinforcement offers high tensile stiffness in conjunction with enhanced resistance to chemicals in the soil, particularly in alkaline environments. This Life Cycle Assessment examines an average product. The following products are reviewed: Fortrac® 35/20-20/30 MPT (woven) Fortrac® 55/25-20/30 MPT (woven) Fortrac® R 80/25-20/30 MPT (knitted) Fortrac® R 110/25-20/30 MPT (knitted) Fortrac® R 150/30-30/30 MPT (knitted) Fortrac® R 200/30-30/30 MPT (knitted) The average was established by adding the LCA results for each individual product and dividing by the total quantity produced. The products differ in their composition. Depending on the product, the percentages of polyvinyl alcohol, polyamides and polymer coating differ. Polyester is also added to warp-knitted products. Other differences are to be found in the mass per unit area and the technical characteristics. |

Technology description including background system | The grid structure is manufactured on textile machines. The weft yarns (CMD) are made entirely of polyamide while the warp yarns (MD) are made of polyvinyl alcohol. The grid structure is manufactured either by weaving or knitting. In contrast to the weaving process the knitting process also uses Polyester as a binding thread. Following that, a polymer coating is applied to protect the geogrids. Standard geosynthetic grid rolls have an area of 1000 m² and are 5 metres wide. The goods are packaged by winding onto cardboard cores followed by sheathing in PE foil. Technical data: The following section outlines details on product performance in terms of their essential characteristics in accordance with EN 13249 et seq. were included and specified in the Declaration of Performance. Declared unit: The LCA was set up separately for each individual product. The LCA results were then added and averaged across the entire production volume. 1 m² geosynthetic geogrid was selected as the declared unit in accordance with /PCR, Part B/. The conversion factor and surface reference for individual products are indicated in the following table. |
