Key Data Set Information
Location DE
Geographical representativeness description The data set represents the country specific situation in Germany, focusing on the main technologies, the region specific characteristics and / or import statistics.
Reference year 2017
Name
Use - 1 kWh of final energy from wood chips (according to EnEV)
Use advice for data set This dataset refers to the production of 1 kWh of thermal energy from wood chips. The data set is intended for the use of final energy acc. EnEV as reference. The final energy acc. EnEV already takes into account system losses and system efficiency as well as power supply and power consumption, which is why this is not included in this data set. Therefore, the combustion process is calculated with 100% efficiency. To calculate the life cycle assessment results at building level, the indicator results have to be multiplied with the final energy demand acc. EnEV.
Technical purpose of product or process Thermal energy from wood chips is used for heating a building or technical processes (e.g. drying).

Technology description including background system This dataset includes wood extraction, wood chips production, transportation and incineration of wood chips, as well as landfilling of incineration residues (ash). An economic allocation has been used at sawmill level to allocate the loads of different sawmill products. A natural drying (no loads) has been modeled to get 20 M.% water content of the wood chips. Since final energy according to EnEV is the reference value for this dataset, a boiler efficiency of 100% has been calculated. Usually occurring system losses as well as auxiliary energy and power consumption in relation to boiler operation are not included in this dataset. The life cycle assessment is dominated by the combustion process as well as the sawmill processes and transports. The CO2 balance of the fuel is almost neutral - the amount of CO2 bound during the growth phase of the tree is released during the combustion process.
